Trivium has officially announced their eleventh studio album, ‘Crown in the Grave,’ set for release on November 20 via Roadrunner Records. As Consequence first reported, the band has also unleashed the title track as the blistering lead single, signaling a significant new chapter for the veteran metalcore act. The announcement comes as the band prepares for a major North American tour this fall.
According to a statement from bassist Paolo Gregoletto provided to Louder Sound, ‘Crown in the Grave’ represents a deliberate effort to balance the band’s established sound with fresh inspiration. “We wanted to find the space between… resting on what we’ve already done and reinventing ourselves just for the sake of it,” Gregoletto explained. The track itself leans into the heavier side of Trivium’s sound, hybridizing thrash and metalcore elements with a direct, powerful approach. Frontman Matt Heafy added that the album marks a period of personal and artistic liberation, describing the current iteration of the band as feeling “like a brand new band.”
A Dark, Cinematic World
The creative direction for ‘Crown in the Grave’ was heavily influenced by Japanese cinema, particularly the works of Akira Kurosawa. Gregoletto revealed that the title track was inspired by Kurosawa’s ‘Throne of Blood,’ with the band delving deeper into Japanese horror and films from the 1950s-70s. This exploration fostered a “darker, ghostly atmosphere” that shaped the album’s music, lyrics, and artwork. The band also referenced classic albums like Metallica‘s self-titled ‘Black Album’ and Megadeth‘s ‘Countdown to Extinction’ during the writing process.
This album is a milestone as Trivium’s first full-length recorded at their self-built studio, The Hangar, in Orlando. It also marks the first album with new drummer Alex Rüdinger, whose contributions as both a player and songwriter were highlighted by Heafy as making a “huge difference.” The 12-track album follows the band’s 2021 release, ‘In the Court of the Dragon,’ and last year’s ‘Struck Dead’ EP.
The SoCal Connection
For Southern California metal fans, the news carries immediate excitement. Trivium is scheduled to bring the new material to the region on December 4 with a show at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood. The date is part of their extensive North American tour with co-headliners In Flames and support from Orbit Culture, Fit for an Autopsy, and Frozen Soul. This high-profile tour underscores the band’s enduring relevance and the strength of the metal scene in Los Angeles and beyond, a topic SoCalNomad has covered extensively.
The announcement solidifies a busy season for heavy music in Southern California, following major tours from other genre titans. It positions ‘Crown in the Grave’ as one of the most anticipated metal releases of the fall, promising a powerful live experience for local fans.
With the album’s November 20 release date locked in, the band will continue rolling out singles and videos ahead of the full unveiling. Following the North American run, Trivium and In Flames will embark on a European co-headline tour in March 2027. The release of ‘Crown in the Grave’ marks a pivotal moment for Trivium, showcasing a band confidently evolving while staying true to the aggressive core that has defined their career.
