Netflix has acquired Wu-Tang Clan‘s documentary “The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable,” which chronicles the improbable story behind the group’s one-copy album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.” Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Joanna Natasegara in her feature directorial debut, the film will premiere on the streaming platform October 16, as Variety exclusively reports.
The documentary follows Tarik Azzougarh, better known as Cilvaringz, a Dutch-Moroccan rapper and producer who transformed from teenage Wu-Tang superfan to trusted collaborator. According to Spin, the film explores how his “ambition and creativity” led to creating a 31-track album conceived as a singular work of art rather than a commercial release, with only one physical copy made and sold at auction for $2 million in 2015.
The Shaolin Saga Unfolded
“The Disciple” traces Cilvaringz’s journey from fan to insider, detailing how he worked his way into the group’s inner circle and was mentored by RZA, who serves as an executive producer on the documentary. The film examines the six-year secret recording process and the philosophical underpinnings of an album designed as a protest against music’s devaluation in the digital age. The project took on additional notoriety when the winning bidder turned out to be disgraced pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli, whose ownership added another layer of controversy to the already unconventional release.
Natasegara spent five years making the documentary, which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. She notes that while initially drawn to the secret album story, she discovered deeper themes about “community, talent, tenacity, innovation and love” that Wu-Tang represents. The documentary is produced by Aluna Entertainment and Violet Films in association with Studio Gebbia, Film4, 36 Cinema, and Sony Music Vision.

The group has an upcoming performance at Yaamava Theater at Yaamava Resort and Casino in Highland on October 1, just two weeks before the documentary’s streaming debut.
